WHAT DOES STUDENT DISABILITY RESOURCES AND SERVICES DO?
Students with disabilities at TAMU-Commerce are encouraged to participate in all aspects of campus life. Therefore, Student Disability Resources and Services (SDRS) provides services to students with disabilities to ensure accessibility to university programs. SDRS offers accommodations counseling, evaluation referral, disability-related information and resources, adaptive technology counseling and equipment, testing accommodations, and interpreter services for academically related purposes. SDRS does not provide disability evaluations, tutoring, attendants, scholarships, or pay for personal expenses; however, we will provide referral information.
- Students are required to sign up for an exam 5 business days in advance. You may sign up online by completing the assistive testing request form through the ONLINE PORTAL, UNDER ALTERNATIVE TESTING. PLEASE DO NOT RELY ON THE INSTRUCTOR TO AUTOMATICALLY SEND THE TEST TO SDRS! IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE WITH REGISTERING FOR YOUR EXAM, PLEASE USE THE “INSTRUCTIONS TO SCHEDULE EXAMS“. IF YOU HAVE FURTHER QUESTIONS, PLEASE CONTACT SDRS AT (903) 886-5173.
- All exams will be administered at the regularly scheduled date/time of the class, unless SDRS receives advance approval from the instructor in writing to administer the exam at an alternate date/time.
- In order to maintain integrity of the testing center and the exams being administered, please review the Testing Center Information.
- The Testing Center in the SDRS office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. All exams must be scheduled such that they are completed, with extended time, by the time SDRS closes at 5 p.m.
TAKING YOUR EXAM:
- Punctuality is essential! Our staff scheduling and testing room appointments are set by need. Variation from the schedule may cause undue disturbance and disruption to yours and other exam/quiz accommodations. You would not be late for an exam in class; the same courtesy applies at SDRS.
- There is a 20 minute hold period. If you have not arrived at SDRS within 20 minutes of the scheduled time of the exam, your exam will be returned to the professor whether or not you call to say you will be late. It is then up to you to talk with your professor to request a make-up exam. The professor is not required to grant a make-up exam due to tardiness.
- You will only be allowed to use the amount of time endorsed by your professor with extended time added.
- Your allowable time to take the exam starts at the scheduled time of the exam. If your exam is being picked up at the class or from the professor, your allowable time starts when the exam arrives at SDRS. Your allowable time starts even if you call to say you will be late. Your punctuality is a must!
- You will only be allowed to use the items your professor has approved in writing for the exam.
- You are to supply ALL necessary exam materials.
- The testing rooms are monitored.
- Breaks and trips to the restroom must be approved by SDRS staff.
- You are allowed to wear ear plugs to assist in reducing distractions.
- Cell phones and electronic devices are not allowed in the testing room. They will be collected by SDRS staff and returned at the completion of the exam.
- Anyone found cheating will be required to surrender his/her exam and the instructor will be notified. The testing room is monitored on a regular basis.
CHANGING EXAM DATES/TIMES:
- If the student has scheduled the exam incorrectly, SDRS cannot guarantee that we will be able to administer the exam.
- If the exam date/time changes for any reason, it is the student’s responsibility to modify their exam registration through the online portal.
Although Texas A&M University-Commerce is working diligently to ensure all online course content is accessible, students with disabilities should always register for accommodations. Registering with Student Disability Resources and Services can assist in preventing encounters with inaccessible online content and expedite the solution process so not to hinder the student’s educational experience.

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR STUDENTS WITH ON-CAMPUS SPECIAL HOUSING NEEDS?
The application process for students with on-campus special housing needs is:
- A student must be admitted to Texas A&M University-Commerce.
- To fill out a housing application login to myLEO. The application requires a deposit. If you are requesting special housing accommodations, you must indicate this on the housing application.
- If a student makes an accommodations request directly with Residential Living and Learning, they will be referred to the Department of Student Disability Resources and Services (SDRS).
- The student must provide documentation of disability that supports the need for the requested housing accommodation(s).
- Student Disability Resources and Services will review the application and documentation.

WHAT ARE SOME SPECIAL REQUESTS THAT CAN BE MADE REGARDING HOUSING?
REGISTERING WITH SDRS
In order to receive disability-related accommodations and services, you should abide by the following process:
- Apply and be accepted for admission to Texas A&M University-Commerce through the regular admissions process.
- Complete the SDRS application packet and provide current and comprehensive documentation of a diagnosed disability which requires accommodations. See Guidelines for Documentation information sheet.
- Request your accommodation letters from SDRS at the beginning of each semester by clicking here and logging into your account.
Once documentation is submitted:
- The Director/Associate Director of Student Disability Resources and Services reviews all documentation and determines whether the student is eligible to receive services based on the documented disability.
- Appropriate and reasonable accommodations are determined by the director and student based on the documented needs, previous accommodations, and functional limitations of the student. Refer to Accommodations Section to view more information on accommodations.
- During the initial meeting of the student with a member of the office of Student Disability Resources and Services (SDRS), SDRS policies and procedures are discussed with the student. The student is responsible for requesting accommodation letters be sent to their instructors each semester. Students are encouraged to meet with their instructors to discuss their testing and other accommodations and to answer any questions the instructors may have.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF I AM APPROVED FOR ON-CAMPUS SPECIAL HOUSING?
- If the documentation supports the requested need, SDRS will send the student a letter stating what accommodations have been approved. A copy of the letter will be forwarded to Residential Living and Learning. If the housing request is not supported by the documentation, then SDRS will contact the student to notify them of the decision or to request additional documentation.
- Once the Accommodation Approval Letter has been reviewed by Residential Living and Learning staff, they will notify the student of their placement or may contact the student with further options available.
HOW TO GET DOCUMENTATION
The professional making the diagnosis of a disability should be an appropriately trained evaluator, such as a physician, psychologist, psychiatrist, or educational diagnostician. For example, an audiologist would diagnose a hearing impairment; a psychiatrist, psychologist, or clinical social worker would diagnose a psychological disability. Documentation from a family member or family friend is not acceptable.

SDRS reserves the right to request additional information or evaluation. However, information regarding resources to use in obtaining an evaluation is available from our office.
SDRS serves as the repository for medical documentation of disabilities. Documentation submitted to SDRS is confidential and used solely for the purpose of assisting students in identifying and securing accommodations and services to support their full participation at Texas A&M-Commerce.
GUIDELINES FOR DOCUMENTATION
The documentation submitted to our office should be current according to the guidelines for documentation, comprehensive, and include the following:
- A specific diagnosis, including level of severity.
- The specific findings in support of this diagnosis including relevant history, observations of the individual, tests administered, test results, and your evaluator’s interpretation of those test results. For a diagnosis of Learning Disability, ADD or ADHD, a neuropsychological examination or psycho-educational evaluation is required to determine eligibility for services as a student with a disability. Objective evidence of a substantial limitation must be provided.
- A description of the student’s functional limitations as they are directly related to the stated disabilities and necessitate any accommodations.
- The evaluator’s name, address, telephone number (in the event our office needs to contact the evaluator), and professional credential relevant to the diagnosis. (i.e., M.D., Ph.D., LSSP).
- The documentation must be on letterhead, typed, dated, and signed.
CAN A STUDENT’S PERSONAL ATTENDANT LIVE IN THE RESIDENCE HALL?
A student’s personal attendant may live in the residence hall provided that the personal attendant is a student at Texas A&M University-Commerce. The University does not provide, but can assist the student, in finding a personal attendant. A student needing a personal attendant should discuss this with the department of Student Disability Resources and Services.
SDRS is not required to provide readers or study devices for courses not offered by Texas A&M University-Commerce, individually prescribed devices, personal attendants, or tutorial services.
CAN A STUDENT WITH ON-CAMPUS SPECIAL HOUSING NEEDS REQUEST A SPECIFIC ROOMMATE?
ARE THERE HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE ROOMS ON CAMPUS?
ADMISSIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:
There are no special admissions procedures for students with disabilities at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Students with disabilities must satisfy the same requirements and undergo the same process for admission as every other student.
The question frequently comes up about whether a prospective student should disclose a disability during the admissions process. As a general rule of thumb, if your application is marginal, then disclosing your disability and special circumstances in the essay portion of the application can help you.
- Accommodations are provided on an individual basis as needs arise.
- Examples of accommodations include extended testing time, interpreters, note-taking, reader services, scribe services, audio books and other adaptive technology.
- Although not accommodations, SDRS supports students with issues and situations related to advocacy, accessibility, and on-campus housing.
- SDRS is a resource for information including, but not limited to, tutoring services, study skills and time management, community resources, disability awareness, and various university services.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT ON HIGHER EDUCATION OF 1990?
The Americans with Disabilities Act on Higher Education of 1990 impacts the whole institution including activities, facilities, programs, and employment. In regards to academics, the Americans with Disabilities Act on Higher Education 1990 required higher education institutions to provide reasonable accommodations for students. WHAT IS CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE DOCUMENTATION OF A DISABILITY?
WHAT CAN A STUDENT WITH A DISABILITY EXPECT IN REGARDS TO ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES?
In regards to admissions procedures, a student with a disability:
- Must apply through normal channels
- May not be asked about disability status during application by Admissions

SINCE THE STUDENT IS NOW IN CHARGE OF HIS OR HER EDUCATIONAL PLANNING, WHAT ARE SOME SELF-ADVOCACY SKILLS HE OR SHE SHOULD DEVELOP?
Student Disability Resources and Services strongly encourages students to develop these self-advocacy skills:
- Understanding Your Disability: A student should be able to articulate what his or her disability is.
- Communicating Disability: A student should also be able to describe how the disability limits him or her functionally. A student should also be able to express some ways that he or she could be accommodated.
- Being Proactive: A student should provide acceptable documentation to SDRS and request accommodations. A student should learn to work collaboratively with professors to ensure his or her success with the accommodations. A student should also be able to identify if his or her accommodations are not being met.

The responsibilities towards students with disabilities in Higher Education institutions are very different from those of high schools. High schools are required under IDEA to identify the educational needs of students with a disability and provide a free and appropriate education.
This responsibility is not required of Higher Education institutions. Higher Education institutions are required to provide appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations to ensure that a student with a disability is not discriminated against. The student is responsible for disclosing his or her disability to the institution and seeking accommodations.
DOES THE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES EDUCATION ACT (IDEA) APPLY TO HIGHER EDUCATION?

STUDENT ACCOMMODATION LETTERS:
Students’ accommodation letter(s) must be emailed to you before you can provide accommodations to them. The accommodation letters will be emailed to you from the SDRS office and will describe in general terms the appropriate academic accommodations for their disability and for your class. Because general terms are used in the letters, it may be necessary to contact SDRS to determine exactly how to implement the accommodation. If a student identifies him/herself as having a disability and you have not received a letter, please ask them if they have requested their accommodation letter from SDRS. If the student does not have a letter, feel free to continue to discuss the concerns with the student; however, make sure the student knows you will need the letter before you can provide any accommodations. Students are required to request letters from SDRS every semester. If a student tells you that they registered last semester, please remind the student that they have to request accommodation letters every semester and refer them to our office.
Pick up and Return of Exams in SDRS
- SDRS will contact the instructor five days prior to the test date (or as soon as the student schedules the exam) to request the exam.
Instructors may choose one of several methods for getting the exam to SDRS:
- email the exam to StudentDisabilityServices@tamuc.edu
- fax the exam (903) 468-8148
- hand deliver the exam to SDRS (Gee Library, Room 162)
- request SDRS to pick up the exam at the instructor or department’s office
Both the fax machine and email are closely monitored by the SDRS staff.
- SDRS tracks the exam from the time it is picked up to the time it is returned to maintain the security of the exam. Exams in SDRS are kept in a locked drawer.
- When sending a copy of the exam to SDRS, the instructor should include a copy of the instructor testing checklist so that the test proctor will know what to allow the student to use during the exam, etc. If the instructor testing checklist is not included and specific directions are not given for the exam, the student will not be allowed to use a calculator or other aids that may have been permitted.
- After the student completes the exam, it will be returned to the instructor/department in a timely fashion.
- Students testing in the SDRS office are monitored throughout the day by SDRS staff by walk-through and a recorded camera surveillance system. Students are not allowed to take cell phones or other electronic communication devices into the testing room.

A Few Reminders of Things to Do
- Please fill out a instructors testing checklist and include with each test that you send to SDRS. The purpose of the form is to cut down on any confusion as to what materials, etc. the student is allowed to use on the exam.
- Use SDRS as a resource. Call us or come by anytime you have a question, concern, or suggestion related to a student with a disability or his/her accommodations.
- At any time you may suspect that a student has a disability; however, the student has not self-identified. Feel free to contact SDRS about ways in which to refer these students to our office. Keep in mind we are also available to speak to your class or campus organization on topics related to individuals with disabilities and services provided.
A Few Reminders of Things NOT to Do
- Ask students to disclose their specific disabilities. They may voluntarily do so; however, it is a violation of their rights for you to ask them.
- Include student names in e-mails that identify them as a student serviced by our office unless you have verification from our staff that the student has given permission for us to communicate with you in this manner.
- Tell students they have unlimited time or as much time as they want on an exam. An accommodation may be extended time (typically 1.5 times the amount of time allotted in class). Sometimes the accommodation does not include extended time, rather testing in a reduced distraction environment. Unlimited testing is usually never an accommodation.
- Ignore the accommodation letter. To do so is a violation of federal law and places the University at great legal risk. Once specific accommodations are approved, the student is the only one that has the right to decline the use of them.
- Provide additional accommodations for which you have not received documentation from the SDRS office. Some students may choose to bypass registering with the SDRS office and attempt to arrange accommodations directly with you. Always refer these students to our office unless it is a modification you plan to offer to every student in your class.

disABLEDperson, Inc. is a faith-based non-profit organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities find employment. This occurs through the disABLED Person online recruitment program and through cooperative agreements with other mainstream employment services. We are proud to announce the addition of our new service for students with disabilities who have or are close to obtaining a college degree. We are working alongside employers to secure job postings for these graduates. disABLED Person will launch September 15, 2009. To participate, please spread the word about our new service to the student disability population at your school, those graduating and alumni.
