Spanish Film Club Series Prepares Students for Interconnected World

A collaboration between Dr. Shonda Gibson, associate chair of the A&M-Commerce Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), and Dr. María Lamarque, QEP core committee member, will bring the Spanish Film Club series to the university. These films will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles in The Club of the Rayburn Student Center at 5:30 p.m. on the following dates:

Feb. 26 – “También la lluvia” / “Even the Rain” (2011)
March 5 – “Un cuento chino” / “Chinese Take-away” (2012)
March 21 – “Aquí y allá” / “Here and There” (2012)
March 31 – “Contracorriente” / “Undertow” (2010)

Edit: Previously scheduled for March 27 at 5:30 p.m.,  “La Yuma” will now be shown at 4:30 p.m.

The Spanish Tertulia and Portuguese Bate-Papo, social gatherings for attendees to practice having informal conversations in the languages, will take place at 4:30 p.m. before each film showing.

The Spanish Film Club series is an initiative by PRAGDA, a film distribution company that promotes, disseminates and maintains the legacy of Spanish and Latin American cinema. PRAGDA offers a highly competitive grant twice a year to help universities use fine contemporary Spanish and Latin American cinema to introduce students to the Spanish language and cultures. Lamarque, associate professor and director of the Spanish graduate program, applied for and received the PRAGDA grant on behalf of A&M-Commerce.

The Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., the Spain-USA Foundation and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain also provided support for the film series.

“The SFC is possible thanks to a collective effort and collaboration from the QEP Project, the Provost Office and professors across colleges at the university,” said Lamarque. “This festival will introduce students and a generally broader audience to the cultures of these territories, stimulating knowledge and cultural exchange, which are keys for educating students in an interconnected world.”

The Spanish Film Club series will coincide with QEP Week at A&M-Commerce, which runs Feb. 24 – 28. The week celebrates the university's commitment to preparing students for an interconnected world through the QEP plan.
