Readings will concentrate on the social, economic and political institutions that led to the rise and triumph of Jeffersonian-Jacksonian democracy; religious revivalism and social reform movements; American Indian policy; African-American culture, and the dilemma of slavery in the development of sectional tension and rivalry.
