Social Work (MSW):: Focus your passion

Focus Your Passion

The Department of Social Work offers two tracks toward earning your master’s degree.

Foundation Track

This track is for those without a Bachelor of Social Work degree. You must complete 60 hours including the foundation track if you do not have a BSW.

Total credit hours: 60

Advanced Generalist Practice Track

This track is designed for those with a Bachelor of Social Work degree.

Step 1. Submit Application

Submit your application through ApplyTexas.

  • Select “Create a new graduate school admissions application.”
  • Select “Texas A&M University-Commerce as your “Target university.”
  • Select “Social Work, MSW” as your “Major.”
  • Pay the $50 application fee.

Wait to receive an application confirmation email before proceeding to the next step.

  • After you submit your application, the Graduate School will send a confirmation email within two business days to the personal email account you used for ApplyTexas.

Step 2. Submit Documents

Submit the following documents after you receive an application confirmation email.

Official Transcripts

Contact your previous institution(s) and request that they send your official transcripts to [email protected].

  • We recommend that you request transcripts for all of your academic work.

Postal Alternative

If your institution is unable to submit a digital copy, hard copies may be mailed to:

Statement of Goals

Describe your preparation for graduate work, your academic interests and goals in no more than 500 words.

Submit a resume or curriculum vitae (CV) which includes your academic and professional history and achievements.

Look for application updates in myLeo > Apps > Check Application Status

  • Once an admission decision has been made, you will receive an email to your student email account at myLeo > Apps > Leomail.

Step 3. Apply for Financial Assistance

  • Apply for FAFSA and TAFSA financial aid through the state and federal governments during the admission application process. Use code 003565.
  • Apply for outside scholarships once you are admitted to A&M-Commerce.
  • Check your financial aid and scholarship info through myLeo > Student Resources > Financial Aid Information.

Step 4. Register for Classes

Once registration opens and you are eligible to enroll, your graduate enrollment specialist will contact you to complete registration.

  • View your degree plan in DegreeWorks.
  • To register for classes, go to myLeo > Student Resources > Registration Menu.

Contact your graduate enrollment specialist if you have any questions regarding your degree plan and registration.

Advanced Standing Program Requirements

  • Have a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program
  • One of the following GPA options
    • Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale
    • GPA of 3.00 on the last 60 undergraduate hours

  • Undergraduate degree in Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education accredited program with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 overall.

Professional Narrative Statement

Write a letter, double spaced, with no less than three pages including the following information:

  1. Describe the development of your interest in the field of social work.
  2. What are your personal qualifications for social work practice?
  3. Express your feelings, experience and ideas about working with diverse and
    oppressed populations.
  4. Discuss any social experiences or personal situations that had a significant
    impact on you. How did these experiences contribute to your understanding of
    your values/beliefs/etc.?
  5. Discuss your ability to establish positive helping relationships and ability to make
    professional judgments.
  6. What are your expectations of graduate education? Describe the knowledge
    and skills you hope to gain.
  7. Describe your strengths and learning needs that may affect your professional
    practice in the social work field.
  8. Have you ever been charged and/or convicted of a misdemeanor or a felony? Yes or No? If yes, explain.
  9. Do you have current or previous mental health issues? Yes or No? If yes, explain.
  10. In order to be licensed in social work, and to become employed in some
    agencies, applicants are required to disclose any legal history or history of
    emotional conditions that may affect employment. For these reasons, the
    admissions committee requests that applicants to the MSW program address
    these issues and how they may affect one’s academic performance in this
    professional narrative statement. The applicant may request this information
    be kept confidential within the admissions committee structure.

Transfer Student

If you’re transferring from another Master of Social Work program, you’re required to sign a release of information form, which will allow us to communicate with your previous MSW program.

Foundation Program Requirements

Applicants with one of the following degrees must complete steps 1-7 outlined below:

  • A bachelor’s degree in social work (*BSW) from a CSWE accredited program that is older than 6 years from their anticipated start date (no matter of GPA); or
  • A bachelor’s degree (BSW) from a CSWE accredited program and whose overall bachelor’s GPA is less than a 3.00 overall; or
  • A bachelor’s degree (BSW) from a non-CSWE accredited program (no matter of GPA); or
  • A bachelor’s degree (non-BSW) from an accredited college, university or equivalent institution (no matter of GPA).

  • All official transcripts from any university/college to A&M-Commerce School of Social Work
  • A current resume (less than one year old at time of admission review)
  • A current 2-3-page Professional Narrative Statement addressing items outlined in 1-10 on the form.
  • Students transferring from another MSW program are required to sign a release of information form, which will be used to communicate with the previous MSW program
  • Three current recommendations:
    • References must be submitted on TAMUC School of Social Work reference form and include an original signature
    • References from co-workers, family or friends are not acceptable
    • References must be less than one year old at time of admission review
    • Reference forms must be completed and submitted by the person providing the reference. References sent by the student will not be accepted.

*Applicants who hold a BSW from a CSWE accredited institution that is older than 6 years must complete steps 1-7 for those seeking admission to the Foundation Program. However, all documents will be reviewed and a determination will be made as to admission for Advanced Standing or Foundation based on course work competencies.

The match between your master’s level courses and the requirements for completion of an entry-level Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs will be considered in the admissions decision.

English Proficiency

You do not need to submit test scores if you have completed (all years) of a bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited university in the United States.

Request that your scores from one of the following be sent to Texas A&M University-Commerce:

  • TOEFL (Minimum Scores: IBT 79, or CBT 213, or PBT 550)
  • IELTS (Minimum Score: 6.00 band overall)
  • PTE (Minimum Score: 53 overall or higher)
  • Duo Lingo (Minimum Score: 105)

*Scores must be less than two years old.

Submit these documents to the Office of International Programs once you have been admitted

  • Official sponsor statement
  • Bank statement from the sponsor with a balance of at least $26,025 USD which is less than 1 year old
