Our Department of Reading offers three tracks that guide you to your career goals. Discover which reading program works best for you.

Master of Science (MS) Non-thesis

Is the classroom where you want to be? With our Master of Science (MS) program, you can earn your way to the classroom! Obtain a Texas teacher certificate while earning your degree. You’ll be certified to teach at all grade levels (prekindergarten-grade 12). No foreign language is required.

Master of Education (MEd) Non-thesis

Are you a current educator? Improve your teaching skills with our Master of Education (MEd) track. Learn how to engage your students to become master thinkers while reading class content. If you’re interested in becoming certified in all-level reading, this track is for you. No foreign language is required.

Master of Art (MA) Thesis and Non-thesis

Literacy speaks many languages, and so can you. Our Master of Arts track tests your knowledge of a foreign language, whether Spanish or Mandarin. Recommended for those pursuing PhD programs, this track offers a thesis and non-thesis option. No foreign language is required.

Graduate Program Costs

Program Costs

As of Fall 2019, tuition and fees for a graduate student taking 9 credit hours through our 1 Year Optional Rate Plan is $3,288.98 for a Texas resident and $7,086.98 for a non-Texas resident. However, rates do change based on the number of credit hours taken, payment plan used and other factors.

Admission Requirements

Required Documents for Domestic Students

If you are an H1B or H4 applicant, please contact the Graduate School for details at [email protected].

  • Apply Texas Application
  • Application fee: $50
  • All official transcripts
    • Bachelor’s degree, including all transcripts used towards a bachelor’s degree
    • Any master’s degree transcript(s) with graduate coursework (if applicable)

  • One of the following:
    • Valid teaching certificate
    • Passing PPR, ExCet or TExES scores
    • Official General Test GRE scores

Application Packet Submission Deadline

Domestic student applications are accepted throughout the year.
Note: This program is not available to international students.
