Vicky Turner wasn’t sure what to do next. She had traveled the world with her family and even graduated high school in Athens, Greece. After she completed her degree in international relations, she planned on pursuing a career in government that would allow her to continue her travels; however, life had other plans. In 2006, a job opening at A&M-Commerce led her to the Lion family. Ever since, Vicky has been an invaluable part of the university’s Graduate School. Every day, she provides resources to help students flourish. Whether she’s working on campus or spending time with her family, Vicky finally feels at home.

A Conversation with Vicky Turner

Tell us a little about yourself.

“I was fortunate to live a wonderful life as a child. I was born in Berlin, West Germany and lived in Italy, Yugoslavia and Greece. I found my way to Texas and attended college at Texas Christian University with the desire to work overseas at an embassy. I love travel and food. But life had a different plan for me. I came to A&M-Commerce in 2006 and have found my home here.”

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

“A&M-Commerce is such a dynamic community. Our university is diverse; in not only the program offerings but also the students, faculty and staff. We offer both face-to-face and online graduate programs and our programs meet the academic and career needs of our students. Many of our graduate students are professionals and our programs work with them to meet their time constraints. We offer a large school education but have a small town feel. You are not just a number with us.”

How do you help students throughout their time here?

My position as the Doctoral Degree Coordinator means I help our doctoral students from inquiry to graduation. I strive to help our doctoral students in any way possible from completing the application process and gaining admission to their program to completing their doctoral program successfully and graduating. Students can contact me anytime along their journey and I will help them. Sometimes it is a simple question and answer and other times, it is more complex and involves multiple departments.
