Tony Lee, Ph.D., is a first-generation college graduate who considers himself fortunate to have had wonderful people in his life to guide and mentor him. He reports that the journey wasn’t smooth or easy, but through mentorship, he began to develop his identity and confidence. He leans on his experience as a university administrator and faculty member to serve and guide students on their journey … particularly first-generation students.

A Conversation with Dr. Lee

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

As a faculty member, I believe A&M-Commerce not only offers a good selection of programs to students, but we also offer great support systems and resources to students. We care about your personal and professional success, development and growth. We are here to guide you, beginning the first day you arrive on campus.

What draws you to your discipline?

What excites me about the higher education and learning technologies discipline is the ability to help prepare future higher education administrators and workforce learning professionals.

What has been your favorite course to teach?

Servant leadership is, by far, my favorite course to teach.

I am working on research pertaining to LGBTQ international students' transition to U.S. higher education. International students experience different challenges as they transition to U.S. institutions. It adds another layer of stress to international students who identify as members of the LGBTQ community. As faculty and higher education administrators, we need to understand their transition process so that we can be more prepared to serve them.
