A Conversation With Scott

Class of 2010, Senior Airman 1st Class, U.S. Air Force

What honors/awards did you receive during your military service?

I received a Purple Heart for getting hit and losing my left leg to a mortar attack while in Balad, Iraq, and an Air Force Commendation Medal for saving six lives while in Iraq. Four Marines and two Airmen were shot down while flying in a helicopter over a hostile environment, and I was the first to see and render help while we waited for backup and rescue. After getting my Purple Heart and Commendation Medal, the United States Air Force named a brand new Air Force Airfield after me that was built in Kandahar, Afghanistan and now supports the biggest controlling efforts for the country.

Why did you choose to attend A&M-Commerce?

I chose A&M-Commerce because it was in the great state of Texas, and because I had friends that were attending this university while I was in the service and had nothing but great things to say about it. I love A&M-Commerce, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to get my education and make friendships that will last a lifetime!

What are your career plans?

I am a social work major at A&M-Commerce because I want to help veterans like myself, veterans who have been to war, who have been injured and who have served this country by spilling their blood, sweat and tears so that we could have our freedoms.

What student organizations have impacted your time at A&M-Commerce?

I owe a lot of my success to my fraternity, Sigma Chi. School can be very overwhelming with exams, homework, projects and studying and being in Sigma Chi I have had brothers to fall back on when I need help with school and almost anything else in life. I believe that all students should join some form of student organization because you will learn so many different things that cannot be taught in a classroom.
