From an early age, Rebecca Stephens wanted to be a teacher. In fact, she set up her first classroom in her bedroom and taught her stuffed animals. Learning from her students is her source of inspiration and she cherishes mentoring them as they develop into future professionals. As an alumna, Rebecca is active in the A&M-Commerce alumni club.

When she’s not teaching or volunteering, Rebecca is at home with her family and three dogs—one Pharaoh Hound and two Cirneco dell’Etna, which are both Mediterranean hunting breeds. In her home, these fur babies hunt cozy spots on the couch or a welcoming lap.

A Conversation with Rebecca Stephens

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

“A&M-Commerce provides a wonderfully diverse and cohesive university community. Commerce has a uniquely small town feel while being conveniently located to Dallas. The faculty and staff at A&M-Commerce are extremely supportive and attentive to students’ needs, including academic, sport and personal endeavors.”

How has A&M-Commerce influenced your life and/or career?

“I’ve had the honor of being part of the A&M-Commerce family since 1993. My students and faculty colleagues are a constant source of inspiration and support. Every day, in every way, I feel the presence of A&M-Commerce in my life encouraging me to grow, strive and help others in making their academic and professional dreams come true.

Over the years, my most cherished moments include attending professional conferences with colleagues, working with teachers and students in area school districts and participating in productive and energetic committee work. I enjoy laughing with my students, giving them a listening ear during difficult times and providing them with alternative learning environments such as distance education and web-based learning. And I’m always up for cheering on a Lions team full of heart and skill.
