Nailah Boyo is an A&M-Commerce alumnus who is currently pursuing a master of science in higher education at A&M-Commerce. As a first-generation college student, her undergraduate journey was challenging to say the least; but with help from her “infinity stones” (mentors), she met the ultimate goal of obtaining her bachelor’s degree in communications. Deemed by her peers as the “Mayor of Commerce,” she is a person who enjoys transforming ideas from paper into reality. In her role, Nailah is responsible for planning, implementing and assessing cultural heritage month celebrations. She also serves as a graduate student advisor for Sista 2 Sista, a living-learning community for African-American women. Applying to A&M-Commerce happened by chance, but her staying in Commerce and learning through experiential opportunities changed her life and allowed her to grow both on a personal and professional level!

A Conversation with Nailah

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

My advice is to make A&M-Commerce work for you. What I mean by this is college and life will only give you as much as you put out. If you say that your college experience was not fun or life-changing, what did you do to make that happen for you? Enjoy college and get involved.

What makes you passionate about Intercultural Engagement & Leadership?

That would be the lives that we have the privilege to influence daily. Students sometimes come in the office on days when they feel like they cannot move on or feel like a fraction of who they are. We get to not only pour into students but teach them the meaning of resilience through experiential learning and intentional conversations. This office is not always about business; no, there is time for community and unity most days.

What do you like most about your career?

When it comes to my career, I love to plan things as I go. The amount of change that can happen in the education field is endless. In my current position, I can see things from both viewpoints, student and professional, so that is helping me format the way I would want my future nonprofit to be modeled around.
