Mathematics for all. Mehmet Celik, Ph.D. has defined his career as an academic by his central belief that math is fun and accessible to all. He finds joy in the creativity of his field and in opening new mathematics perspectives for students. The more a student desires to learn, the more Celik is eager to teach. His exceptional career includes a wealth of published research, a fully developed course for the development of mathematical intuition, and even a couple of Annual Calculus Bowl titles.

A Conversation with Dr. Celik

What draws you to your discipline?

I work in the area of mathematics known as complex analysis. It requires a diverse knowledge of mathematics, which makes it a very effective problem-solving tool. I get the intellectual joy of doing some very creative work. Moreover, this gives me the breadth to understand, work and teach different areas of mathematics.

Tell us about a project you are working on or have completed.

I recently finished a project in collaboration with three A&M-Commerce undergraduate students on generalizing the excess area of images of the unit disk under some special functions. The idea for our project originated from J. D’Angelo's Hermitian Analysis book. The general purpose of doing research in pure mathematics is to generate a database of mathematical knowledge for applied mathematicians, engineers and scientists to use in their work.

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

We are aware that there are other aspects of life apart from being successful in exams and we love working with students to help them thrive. To be successful, one should always manage their time, work hard, be organized and do something every day.
