As a child growing up in the Gulf region of the Middle East, Hanan wanted to become a dentist. That is until she began taking physics courses under the British education system where she fell in love with the process of learning and scientific thinking. One of her most avid supports is her father who is a mathematics professor. He wanted his seven children to have enriching learning experiences within different cultures. The result has been that each of Hanan’s siblings have been educated in different countries. Her educational experiences took Hanan to Africa before coming to the United States where she earned her doctorate in education administration and supervision.

Hanan loves being a teacher which allows her to share her knowledge with mathematics students. She taught at Tennessee State University for fifteen years before moving to Texas and becoming an instructor at A&M-Commerce. Additionally, for the past three years, Hanan has served in various roles at the Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair. When taking a break from teaching and researching, Hanan can be found reading poetry or taking photos in her favorite place, a park near her home in Plano.

A Conversation with Hanan Kuzat

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

A&M-Commerce is a great place to study and build one's personality and social life. Take pride in being a Lion!

How has A&M-Commerce influenced your life and/or career?

I have been able to take time to contribute to my community in Plano, flourish as a scholar and instructor and encourage my students as they define their academic and personal goals. We are like a family in the mathematics department. Part of our mojo here is being part of the larger Lion community. I am a Lion through and through.

Tell us about an academic project you are working on or recently completed.

There is a body of research on comparing the advantages and disadvantages for online and face-to-face academic acquisition. Conversely, there is limited research analyzing the contributions and challenges for hybrid and face-to-face learning environments. I am examining which is better for students and how hybrid teaching and learning has become more popular over the last year.
