Carol Revelle, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, Master's Reading Program Co-Coordinator and Director of National Writing Project of Northeast Texas

Dr. Carol Revelle came from a tough home. Her escape was reading a book every day.

When the time came to choose a career, Revelle just wanted to keep reading. She earned a degree in English and minored in education. Following graduation, she began teaching middle-school English and fell in love with teaching reading and writing at various levels.

While working on her doctorate, Revelle attended the North Star of Texas Summer Writing Institute. The experience changed her life and teaching, resulting in her efforts to start the National Writing Project of Northeast Texas, where she focuses on developing a strong and sustainable writing project that serves teachers in our community. She hopes the project will impact lives long after her career concludes.

A Conversation with Dr. Revelle

What would you tell a student who is considering A&M-Commerce?

A&M-Commerce is a medium-sized university with the advantages of a big school—such as a nice gym, pool and dorms—and the advantages of a small school, including strong faculty and community support in a student-centered environment.

What draws you to your discipline?

I love designing learning experiences that provide meaningful growth opportunities in collaborative online and in-person environments. I'm always looking for cool new ways to help students make authentic connections that make them better teachers and help them live happier lives.

What has been your favorite course to teach?

My favorite teaching experience is in the National Writing Project of Northeast Texas Summer Institute, which is a component of our master's Reading program. We take a deep dive into writing instruction and how it can bridge learning in all content areas.

Tell us about a project you are currently working on or recently completed.

The National Writing Project of Northeast Texas provides great opportunities for me to support our community and my career. We have been able to provide these professional development events to local teachers without charge, and they have been eager to engage. Additionally, the research that comes from this work provides our team with research- and grant-writing opportunities we wouldn't have otherwise. We just submitted a grant to the National Endowment for the Arts and are looking for other funding grants to support the teachers in our community.
