TAMUC Faculty Carrero Secures Research Funding

Associate professor Kelly M. Carrero, Ph.D., in the Department of Psychology and Special Education at A&M-Commerce, recently secured funding to research the design and implementation of a community-based program to increase safe interactions between law enforcement and people with exceptionalities who are in crisis.

The research funding is provided by a private foundation choosing to remain anonymous. Based in Pennsylvania, the foundation seeks to ensure the safety of vulnerable people, including those with disabilities.

The research project includes an interagency team comprised of a local behavioral health system, two police departments and disability service providers.

Carrero praised the efforts of research graduate assistant Britta Schwab, a doctoral student in the experimental psychology program at A&M-Commerce.

“These funds are the result of a lot of hours, meetings and hard work,” Carrero said. “Britta was instrumental in each step of the process and her dissertation research will be funded as a result of this award.”

Carrero indicated that the research team submitted several other letters of intent with hopes of securing additional funding for the project.
