Hunt County Public Art to Install Pieces by University-Connected Artists

The 2016 Hunt County Public Art project will install three major pieces of artwork this year by artists with connections to Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Hunt County Public Art is part of the Keep Greenville Beautiful Project and Hunt County Public Art organization. The three projects to be installed this year are by artists Brian Weaver, Bob Bird and JJ Savage.

Weaver serves as the Coordinator of Art Facilities and Summer Activities and as an adjunct instructor at A&M-Commerce. His project, be seen, is a large steel sculpture that will be installed on a small wall at the Renshaw, Davis & Ferguson law firm at 2900 Lee Street in Greenville. The sculpture is double-sided and designed to let people photograph themselves within the artwork.

“be seen is a large scale sculpture depicting a figurative character peering over a small wall while contemplating whether or not to interact with society,” said Weaver. “be seen is a social commentary on the awkwardness of human interactions.”

Bird is an alumnus of the A&M-Commerce art program and is currently an adjunct for the Department of Art. His project, Find Your Match, will be painted on the Herald-Banner's cinder-block wall at 2305 King Street in Greenville. The artwork uses colors that let viewers play a matching game by only using each mixed color on two squares on the wall, allowing viewers to try and find the matching pair of colors.

Savage is a former graduate student from the Department of Art. His project, Bridge Crossing, will be installed in a sculpture park in Commerce near David Zvanut's Eternal Carousel across from the Commerce City Park. The piece uses wooden bridge timbers that are sunk into the ground like dominoes, making an arch that leaves the impression of a bridge over the ground.
