Gee Library Extends Hours for Students Beginning Fall 2013

The James G. Gee Library at Texas A&M University-Commerce began operating on a 24/5 schedule at the beginning of the fall 2013 semester in response to student requests.

The library will be open continuously from 2:00 pm Sunday until 8:00 pm Friday during the fall 2013 and the spring 2014 semesters. It will also be open from 10:00am to 4:00 pm on Saturday.

“We hope the students will find the extended 24-hour schedule to be useful,” said Greg Mitchell, Director of Libraries.

Through library surveys and at the President's Roundtable last year, students expressed a need for a 24-hour library facility. President Dan Jones and the University Budget Council approved additional funding which allows the library to hire part-time library aides and a full-time security guard for the night shift.

“Answering the needs of students is important to me,” said Sue Weatherbee, Access Services Manager of Gee Library. “I am very pleased that the library is able to provide 24/5 hours of operation.”

After the first year, the library will submit a report on the project as part of the Reallocation Budget Process. This will determine if there is a need for the library to continue to operate the 24/5 hours for future semesters.
