ETSU Alumna and Kaufman County’s First Woman Lawyer and Judge Celebrates 90th Birthday

East Texas State University alumna Maxine (Darst) Flatt celebrated her 90th birthday on August 25. Flatt logged a historically significant career as the first woman lawyer in Kaufman County, Texas, and the first woman to be elected Kaufman County judge. In the early 1980s, Flatt was one of only about a dozen Texas county judges. She served in the position for 16 years. She also served as the first woman president of the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas. Flatt graduated from East Texas State University in 1970 with a degree in communications.
