Buy Local, Support Commerce

Texas A&M University-Commerce has teamed up with Commerce ISD, the City of Commerce, and the Hunt Hospital Board to bring Buy and Support Local week to Commerce. Individuals from each group are encouraged to shop at local stores during the week of October 5-11 to support the community.

“More than 120 years ago, Professor William Leonidas Mayo moved East Texas Normal College from Cooper to Commerce, due in large part to the support of the local merchants in this community,” said President Dan R. Jones. “Since that time, businesses here have steadfastly supported the university and I encourage all faculty, staff, and students to use this opportunity to show your appreciation by patronizing local businesses.”

The campaign was started by Dr. LaVelle Hendricks, associate professor of counseling, with hopes to build community support for local businesses. With over half of university employees living outside of the Commerce community, keeping support for local businesses and boosting the local economy is vital.

“We are giving all of our employees from these four different entities a chance to shop local, buy local, and support Commerce,” said Hendricks. “Let's support the local community in any way we can.”
